ELEGANT ROOMS!

The Gables Inn Bed & Breakfast makes the perfect hub for your trip to Hot Springs.  The Gables is located just a few blocks from historic downtown, antique stores, restaurants, shops, bathhouses, art galleries and shows.  Most of the art galleries stay open late (5-9 pm) for Gallery Walk on the first Friday of every month to host receptions for new exhibits of local, national and international artists.  Antique Walk is the 3rd Friday of every month and features Antique Row open late (4-8 pm).

"Hot Springs: A Journey Through History" is part of the permanent collection owned by the CVB featuring 19 new photos.

These are just some of the new photos added to this wonderful photo exhibit.

* Babe Ruth at the Hot Springs Country Club, circa 1923, with the Babe holding his golf club like a baseball bat.
* Ruth drinking from a water pump at the Hot Springs Country Club, also circa 1923.
* Ruth riding a horse at Oaklawn Jockey Club, also circa 1923.
* Cy Young, the legendary baseball pitcher, March 23, 1907. This photo was taken during spring training for pitchers held in Whittington Park. At the time Young was the player/manager for the Boston Americans (later renamed the Boston Red Sox).

"Hot Springs: A Journey Through History" consists of photographs from the collection of the Garland County Historical Society that have been enlarged and framed for exhibition purposes.

Oaklawn Park's 2010 live racing season begins! Through April 10th the Thoroughbred world is focused on Hot Springs' world famous Oaklawn Park. Races are Wednesdays through Sundays at 1:30pm and Saturdays at 1pm. Derby Day is April 10.

A National Park Service ranger will lead a series of eight Sunday afternoon hikes along park trails. All hikes will begin at 2 p.m., weather permitting. Each hike will leave from a different location in the park.

 

Hikes are expected to last between 1 and 3 hours. Participants should wear sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots. It is also recommended that participants carry a container of drinking water and consider using insect repellent. A new season brings new sights and sounds. Join us for a little exercise in the beautiful park environment. Children are invited, too, and can earn a park Junior Ranger patch for participating.

 

Parking is available at or near each starting point. Here is the schedule, with starting points, approximate total distances, and estimated elevation changes:

 

March 7: North Mountain leg of Sunset Trail, 1.5 miles. Meet at Gulpha Gorge Campground amphitheater. Difference between highest and lowest elevations on route: 60 feet.

Garvan Woodland Gardens will become a kaleidoscope of color during this 7th annual event. Over 101,000 graceful and delicate tulips will beautifully co-mingle with the wooded landscape and present an impressive floral display. Sharing center stage with the tulips will be thousands of dogwood trees and hundreds of azalea bushes all in peak color that provide a picture-perfect backdrop for family photos. Enjoy a rare opportunity to meet, mingle and talk with horseracing dignitaries from around the country, including legendary jockey, Calvin Borel, who rode his way into the record books aboard one special lady – Rachel Alexandra.  He will be available to sign autographs and photos during a reception at Garvan Woodland Gardens April 7, 2010, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  The Gardens are a department of the University of Arkansas’ Fay Jones School of Architecture.  Heavy hors d’oeuvres, wine, and beer will be served.  Advance reservations and pre-payment are required.

For many, there is no time more festive than Oaklawn's "Racing Festival of the South," and, this year, it’s even more special with the inclusion of the $5M Apple Blossom Invitational race, followed the next day by the Arkansas Derby.  To celebrate the conclusion of the live racing season, Garvan Woodland Gardens, the University of Arkansas' botanical garden, will host "Denim and Diamonds During the Derby" on April 8, 2010,  from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m. on the Edmondson Great Lawn under a clear tent.  Enjoy southern fried catfish with all the trimmings, a full bar, entertainment by the popular soft rock and jazz duo, "Brenda & Ellis" of Little Rock, and the “Daisy Derby,” featuring over-sized jockeys, under-sized “horses” and “trainers” that don’t have a clue.  Proceeds from the event benefit the Gardens’ educational programs.

The race the world’s been waiting for: Rachel Alexandra vs. Zenyatta. The two champion fillies will meet face-to-face for the first time at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Oaklawn President Charles J. Cella has personally guaranteed a $5 million purse to bring Rachel and Zenyatta back to the track where each has already graced the winner’s circle.  The Apple Blossom Handicap, traditionally raced on the Saturday before the season-ending Arkansas Derby, has been moved to the Friday before Oaklawn’s signature race for three-year-olds. The 37th Racing Festival of the South promises to be the greatest racing festival the world has ever seen.
